Hi friends! We’re the Kandy Kidz, and we want to tell you all about our super fun adventure making freeze-dried candy right here in Guelph, Ontario. From learning about safety to using the freeze-drying machine, and even building our own website, we did it all.
Learning About Health & Safety
Before we touched any candy, we had to learn about health and safety. We learned why it’s so important to wash our hands, keep everything clean, and follow public health rules. The public health inspector even came to our house to check out our working facility and gave us a pass to conduct business.
It was so cool to meet them and learn how they make sure candy is safe to eat and safe to ship across Canada.
Freeze-Drying Candy Is Like Magic
Then came the best part: using the freeze dryer! The machine was a lot bigger than we thought! We put in our favourite candies and watched them slowly turn into light, crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth treats. Some of them even puffed up so big it would make a mess inside the freeze dryer!
We learned that some candies shrink, some melt, some puffed up and some don't actually do anything! It was so much fun experimenting with the different types of candies and figuring out which ones we want to put on our website. Plus we got to taste everything!!
Working Together & Learning Tech Skills
Making candy is fun, but we also got to build our website! We learned how to add products to shopify, update the inventory, add photos and product descriptions. And now that we are selling our candy, we are learning how to fulfill and pack up all the treats.
